Richard Smith
Richard has over 25 years’ experience working as both a consulting quantity surveyor and construction company surveyor in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Richard started his career with SQS (formally known as Brown & Associates) in 1987 and rejoined the company in 2001, of which he is now the sole director
Richard’s most recent focus has centered on contract management and financial administration for a large number of education, health, commercial, and industrial projects throughout Southland, as well cost estimating and long term asset maintenance planning.
He is also been used as a peer reviewer for a large number of dairy industry infrastructure projects throughout New Zealand
Doug Riley
Doug joined our firm after 30 years’ experience with Fletcher Construction on a wide range of projects throughout New Zealand. Doug’s experience includes various roles in estimating, tendering, financial administration, commercial planning and management. In 2002 Doug was the administration manager for the $200M JV Manapouri second tailrace tunnel.
Since joining us in 2009 Doug has been involved in various quantity surveying and project management projects throughout Southland. He also has been involved in various insurance valuations, including those associated with infrastructure damage during the Christchurch earthquakes. Doug is an approved MOE provider to develop Schools’ 10YPP. Doug has been team leader and / or project manager on a large number of developments at the SIT campus, as well as acting as client’s representative on the Bill Richardson Transport World Museum.
Andrew Smith
Andrew joined SQS in 2014 after spending 15 years working for Fulton Hogan and prior to that with Opus International Consultants. Andrew brings 20 years of consulting & contracting experience in managing civil engineering projects, including project manager for the 500m Invercargill Airport runway extension in 2005.
Andrew has been project manager for various education facility projects as well as clients representative of a large number of commercial and health sector projects. His roles in these includes coordination of the various consultants and contractors, as well as financial reporting and administration.

We are based in Invercargill and work Southland-wide.
History
Southern Quantity Surveyors may have changed name and branding over a proud history spanning more than three decades, but the professional nature of the business has remained constant.
Timeline
1977
Bevan Brown opens Hallam Eames & Partners in Invercargill. David Main joins the firm in 1978.
1984
Bevan Brown founds the company’s successor Brown & Associates, with David Main appointed Invercargill Branch Manager.
2000
The company splits into three separate companies, David Main becomes director of the Brown & Main in Invercargill
2003
David Main buys the Southland-based company and it is rebranded as Southern Quantity Surveyors
2009
Richard Smith promoted to Director of Southern Quantity Surveyors
2014
David Main retires from Southern Quantity Surveyors and Richard Smith purchases the business
